Gerald Anthony Richardson was a talented photographer who was brought up in the village of Fontmell Magna, Dorset, just a few miles from Shillingstone station on the S&D.

He started railway photography in 1956, in this way getting to know S&D driver Donald Beale and fireman Peter Smith through whom he was often able to request special displays of smoke and steam to enhance the atmosphere of his photographs. At first cycling to S&D locations, he later bought a second-hand moped which enabled him to widen his horizons.

A selection of Tony’s S&D photographs were published in 1975 in a book produced by Bradford Barton. Tony died in 2019 and we were delighted to receive his railway negatives from Lynda Richardson in December 2022.

All of Tony’s photos are listed in the relevant location categories and the S&D and Southern images are also listed separately in these two categories so that you can browse through his work.

All the S&D images have now been scanned and processed. A very small number that require more extensive editing remain to follow. Statements of interest in a modern hardback book have already been received; with the scanning technology and printing methods that have developed since the original book was published in 1975, this will be altogether a different proposition.
