Description

Fowler 2P Class No. 40700 (built 1932) and BR Standard Class 5 No. 73052 (built 1954) head the 9.08 am (SO) Birmingham New Street to Bournemouth West service – reporting code 1O90 is being displayed. The photo was taken from the Bakers Lane bridge and the train will probably have been trailing over the ‘Redan bridge’.

At the time of the photo, 40700 had no shedplate fitted. It’s possible that the plate had been removed for re-use pending imminent withdrawal.

40700 is shown as already allocated to Bath Green Park upon nationalisation in 1948 and remaining there until withdrawal in August 1962. 73052 is shown as allocated to Bath Green Park from new until withdrawal in December 1964/January 1965.
