Description

BR Standard Class 5 No. 73051 (built 1954, with 82F Bath Green Park shedplate) is seen on the Down (Bournemouth-bound) Pines Express on Corfe Mullen bank on 2 March 1961.

Eight carriages can be seen though there would almost certainly be more than that. The engine is working hard, firstly owing to the 25 mph speed limit at Corfe Mullen where the double track from Blandford returned to single and secondly, with the 1-in-80 ascent to the summit at Corfe Mullen.

The single-track line between Broadstone and Corfe Mullen Junction that was built in the 1880s to avoid the need for S&D traffic to reverse at Wimborne. It was built for accommodate double track but was always single.

73051 is shown as allocated to Bath Green Park from new until withdrawal in December 1965.
