Description
BR Standard Class 4 No. 75027 (built 1954) and Bulleid West Country Class No. 34029 Lundy (built 1946) head what will almost certainly be a Down (Bournemouth-bound) through passenger service at Evercreech Junction. There is currently no date available for this image but with greenery on the trees and the allocations shown below, this suggests summer 1960, 61 or 62.
Note the Up Home signal on the right, just ahead of a water column (with adjacent brazier and electric light) that could be used by long freight trains so as to avoid fouling the level crossing when taking water.
Just visible in the high res. image is the Down Advanced Starting signal, with both arms in the ‘off’ position. The distant arm was operated by the combination of both ground frames at Lamyatt Level Crossing (1028 yards away) and Bruton Road Level Crossing (1658 yards away).
75027 is shown as being allocated to Templecombe from February 1960 to November 1962. 34029 is shown as allocated to Bournemouth from June 1959 until withdrawal in September 1964.
