Description

Stanier 3P Class No. 40171 (built 1937, with 82G Templecombe shedplate) hauls two carriages and two milk tanks from Bailey Gate to Templecombe with the Hammoon road bridge just out of sight in the background.

The photographer notes that the Stanier Class 3s put in a brief appearance on the S&D in 1960 but were in such poor condition that they were soon withdrawn – 40171 is shown as allocated to Templecombe from September/October 1960 until April 1961, and was withdrawn within the following few weeks.

This part of the trackbed is now a very scenic stretch of the North Dorset Trailway.
