Description

West Country Class No. 34045 Ottery St. Mary is seen on what is almost certainly a through service (having at least eight carriages) near Oakley (Basingstoke).

Leading carriage set is No. 456 with one brake (immediately behind the loco). From the listing by the Southern Railway Email Group, this is likely to be a three-carriage set; formed in 1929 and disbanded in 1961. The locomotive is shown as being withdrawn in June 1964.

Given that WSHSD_2022_14_903b was clearly taken on the same occasion, and shows a loco withdrawn in March 1961, it is likely that the photo dates from circa 1960.
