Description
BR Standard Class 9F No. 92220 (built 1960); named ‘Evening Star’, the last steam locomotive built by BR workshops and, consequently, always destined to be preserved, stands at Stalbridge with a Down service while BR Standard Class 9F No. 92224 (built 1958, with 82F Bath Green Park shedplate) pulls in with a four-carriage Up passenger service.
The photo was taken on 12 September 1963; some 9Fs reappeared on S&D local services that year owing to a shortage of the more usual motive power, Class 5. The through services that the 9Fs had originally been brought in to haul were diverted away from the S&D in September 1962.
A member of staff waits with a file; perhaps internal mail.
