53808 in the yard at Ropley.

In the early spring we let a contract with the Watercress Line to de-tube the boiler and other smokebox and dome items on 53808 and prepare for a condition report. This was to start the process of finding out the overall condition of the boiler so that we can prepare a scope of work required for its upcoming overhaul. Initial reports suggest that the boiler is in a fair condition and the tubes were certainly in remarkable condition considering some ten years in service. Although we cannot re-use the small smoke tubes, it may be possible to use the large flue tubes again with new ends on them, saving us considerable expense. The below show the engine and the skip used to place the old smoke tubes. Some were even used recently to act as temporary firebars to allow the Merchant Navy No. 35005’s boiler to be test-steamed as part of its overhaul at Ropley.

In the meantime, we are progressing with thoughts and plans to renew the tender tank. CAD drawings will need to be produced for this and we intend to retain its current design which includes the small recess at the back of the tank as seen in the photos below.

I hope to announce very soon that we have come to an agreement with the West Somerset Railway to fulfil their financial commitment with the overhaul. Please keep in touch via our usual contact points and website.
